Introducing YourselfHow to answer basic questions like "So what do you make?" in a meaningful way. For many newer, introverted, neurodivergent, and/or anxious creators, talking about yourself and your work falls somewhere between stressful and impossible. In this 2-hr workshop, participants can select two different starting points (first timer and halfway there) and together work through identifying keywords and crafting answers to common questions that come up in creative conversation. Mindfully preparing for these interactions can facilitate stronger first impressions and produce answers that will stick.A Humphrey Lanham๐Ÿ““ Workshop๐Ÿ”„ Interdisciplinary๐Ÿ‘ฅ Community, โš™๏ธ Skills, ๐Ÿงฐ Workshop123.0, 4.09/18/2026 14:009/18/2026 16:00

Speculative Poetry Workshop for BeginnersSpeculative poetry is poetry (verse) about imagined scenarios outside of everyday experience. For example, unlike literary poetry, in a speculative poem a ghost is both real and a metaphor. The themes of speculative poetry are vast and include, among others, fairy tales, fantasy, supernatural horror, magical realism, monsters, mythology, science fiction, superheroes/supervillians, surrealism, and the unclassifiable. In this workshop, Miguel O Mitchell will briefly describe speculative poetry markets and the Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association (SFPA). Then he will explain the mechanics of how to create five different forms of verse: free verse, scifaiku/horrrku, cinquain, pantoum, and prose poem. After reading an example of each form, we will discuss the traits that make the poem shine, including rhythm, imagery, evocation, and subtext. After our discussion, you will be given one or more prompts to use to create your own poem, and then we will discuss what you have shared on the screen with compassion and respect.(Note: Although all shared poems will be spoken, you are not required to read your poems out loud; Miguel can serve as reader if desired.)Miguel O Mitchell๐Ÿ““ Workshop๐Ÿ–‹ Writing๐Ÿ”ง Craft, โš™๏ธ Skills, ๐Ÿงฐ Workshop1025.0, 26.0, 26.59/19/2026 12:009/19/2026 14:30

The Business of Being a Freelancer (1)The first session of a two part workshop. Attendees do not need to attend both sessions but are welcome to.What is a business license? What is business insurance? What is a business plan? What do I need to know about taxes and bookkeeping in order to get by? Do I really need to put an address on my mailing list? What should I put into my contracts, and what should I watch out for? These are some of the hundreds of questions about setting up a freelancing business that can make the process feel overwhelming, or catch you by surprise when you didn't think about it first. This session will contain a brief presentation built out of questions from registered attendees submitted ahead of time, but will primarily be Q&A style with interaction between the presenter and attendees. If questions center on a few topics, the presentation will develop to do a deeper dive on those. This session will be most useful for folks working in the US as that is the only context where the speaker is competent. We can address folks working in the US from elsewhere to a limited extent.Anaea Lay๐Ÿ““ Workshop๐Ÿ”„ Interdisciplinary๐Ÿ’ฒ Industry Biz, ๐Ÿ—‚ Managing, โš™๏ธ Skills, ๐Ÿงฐ Workshop1529.0, 30.09/19/2026 16:009/19/2026 18:00

Fantastical Facts for Strange Fiction: Building Speculative Concepts from Fungal ScienceSome of the oldest and most expansive organisms on the planet, fungi are remarkably adaptable in terms of their own biology as well as their capacity for symbiosis with other living beings. They can do beautifully weird things that reflect both their consistent pursuit of resources and the changing state of their environment. This makes them a fascinating subject of study for finding worldbuilding inspiration: taking into consideration the history of a place, the evolving interactions of its residents, and the potential to reimagine laws of nature. This workshop will teach participants how to draw from cool science to develop speculative concepts that are personally meaningful.Ayida Shonibar๐Ÿ““ Workshop๐Ÿ–‹ Writing, ๐Ÿ”„ Interdisciplinary๐Ÿงฐ Workshop, ๐Ÿ“š Facts2030.0, 30.59/19/2026 17:009/19/2026 18:30

Writing Premodern MindsetsDo you ever tire of reading fiction in pre-modern settings, only to find that the characters are effectively modern people cosplaying in armor? Do you wonder how stories about premoderns could be written better? In this workshop, we will begin with a brief presentation and Q&A overviewing how premodern cultures and mindsets broadly differ from modern ones, how premodern mindsets might be better reflected in character motivations and interactions, and how (or whether) we might use this information to develop our narrative writing. After the Q&A, we'll set aside time in which to workshop participants' current drafts (a short story, a novel chapter, a comic, a character sketch, etc.) or projects that they're brainstorming, either in groups or individually. Through on-on-one discussion and/or group work, the host will try to address additional questions and provide feedback for all participants as time allows.E.M. The Charged Field - The Idea Practices of writersA major part (and one of the signature joys) of writing is cultivating a process for catching, developing, cataloging, and deploying ideas. This includes ideas at every stage of drafting and editing, and at every scale: from the sentence-level to multi-book arcs. This class will demonstrate a range of techniques for foraging and remixing ideas from the wild -- reality or fiction -- and work them into your stories. We will perform idea-foraging exercises from art, film, writing and introduce different ways of cataloging the ideas that come up. This workshop will be a mix of idea generation, iteration and discussion. We will use multiple tools and prompts to generate the charged field, and then learn how to cull and combine ideas using a designing principle. The goal of the workshop is to leave the writers with a generative way of seeing the world and the art they consume, so that new ideas are never in short supply.ย Sid Jain๐Ÿ““ Workshop๐Ÿ–‹ Writing๐Ÿ”ง Craft, ๐Ÿงฐ Workshop1548.0, 49.09/20/2026 11:009/20/2026 13:00

The Business of Being a Freelancer (2)This is the second of two sessions. Attendees can but are not required to attend the prior session. Familiarity with the material from the prior session is not required. This session will be a high-level overview of business planning, evaluation, and process setup for freelancers. There will be a presentation that covers what a business is and what it should include, how to evaluate whether a business is working, and how to identify process issues and what to do to improve them. Registered attendees will be encouraged to submit questions ahead of the session and the presentation will cater to them. While there will be a prepared presentation, it will be designed to be an interactive session leaning heavily on Q&A, with brief exercises for attendees to engage in during the session. The speaker's experience and competence is with US-based freelancing, but much of the content in this session will be applicable anywhere.Note: This is not the same as Dream Foundry's periodic Business Planning seminars, though some of the content will be similar.Anaea Lay๐Ÿ““ Workshop๐Ÿ”„ Interdisciplinary๐Ÿ’ฒ Industry Biz, ๐Ÿ—‚ Managing, โš™๏ธ Skills, ๐Ÿงฐ Workshop1553.0, 54.09/20/2026 16:009/20/2026 18:00
